The currency used in Bulgaria is Bulgarian Lev / BGN /. Since 1996 an agreement effectively links Bulgarian Lev to the Euro. The exchange rate is fixed to 1 EUR = approx. 1.96 BGN. In Bulgaria, the currency can be exchanged at banks, exchange offices, hotels. Our advice is better to get local currency from ATMs /ATM/. Currently, there are circulating legal coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 stotinki and coins of 1 and 2 lev and banknotes of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 BGN. You can exchange money in some of the exchange offices that you will also easily find. Some exchange offices use tricks such as showing one rate on a board outside and in fact using a different, lower rate.

What is the normal tipping in Bulgaria?

Tips are very welcomed in Bulgaria. Usually, in a restaurant, the norm is 10 per cent of the bill. However, it is up to you to decide if the service has been good and the food delicious. Usually, the customers round up the amounts. In most places, if you pay with a card, the tip cannot be included. That is why it is always good to be prepared with some cash. Tipping is also expected in the tourist industry – it is a custom for tour guides and drivers to be tipped between 8 – 10 per cent. Giving them small coins would be considered as an insult. In spite of the expectations, tipping remains proportional to your level of satisfaction.
